Auto Mergers and Acquisitions: Suicide or salvation?

Posted by Michael Thomas at

We love the Moses figure. A savior riding in from stage right with the ideas, the smarts, and the scrappiness to put things right. Alan Mullaly. Carroll Shelby. Lee Iacocca. Andrew Carnegie. Steve Jobs. Elon Musk. Bart Simpson.

Sergio Marchionne does not likely view himself with Moses-like optics, but the CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently gave a remarkable, perhaps prophetic interview with Automotive News about his interest and the inevitability of merging with a potential automotive partner like General Motors. Marchionne has been overtly public about his notion that GM must merge with FCA. For a bit of context, GM sold 9.9 million vehicles in 2014, posting $2.8 billion in net income, while FCA sold 4.75 million units and earned $2.4 billion in net income, painting a very rosy FCA earnings-to-sales picture. But that's not the entire picture. more...

2017 Cadillac XT5 will debut in Dubai

Posted by Allen Willey at

Cadillac confirmed the 2017 XT5 crossover – the replacement for the SRX – will officially debut at the Dubai Motor Show in November. The XT5 will then make its first North American appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show later that month.

The current SRX is a hugely important vehicle for Cadillac – it's still the company's best-selling product worldwide. But it's pretty old now, having launched in 2009 as a 2010 model. The XT5 will bolster all of the good things about the SRX while finally bringing that product up to date. Above, you can see a spy shot of what looks to be the new XT5, caught during a photo shoot.

2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport

New Discovery Sport to start at $38,920

Land Rover has announced pricing for its full range of vehicles for the 2015 model year, in addition to detailing a number of content updates and other improvements to its lineup. The company's offerings in the U.S. now total six distinct models, not counting the long-wheelbase version of the Range Rover flagship.

Starting with the newest addition to the lineup: The Land Rover Discovery Sport will be powered by a 2.0-liter engine making 240 hp mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission when it goes on sale. The all-new Discovery Sport will of course offer all-wheel drive and a relatively compact footprint, in addition to seating for seven in a 5+2 configuration. The model will feature a whole host of new tech including a new touchscreen infotainment system, in addition to safety features like Autonomous Emergency Braking. The Discovery Sport will start at $38,920. more...

Aston Martin brings impressive lineup of metal to Monterey

Posted by Michael Thomas at

Aston Martin wins the manufacturer's round of Show and Tell on Thursday at Pebble Beach, bringing six cars to the collectors' bacchanalia with four North American debuts among them. The 540-horsepower Aston Martin DB9 GT said hello to US crowds for the first time, likely the beginning of a goodbye tour while it prepares to give way to the coming DB11.

Having finished its work in Rome and other points distant filming Spectre, slotting in between DBs 9 and 11 comes the DB10 making its global public debut. The latest Bond car might look better sitting still in the Aston Martin pavilion than it does in the movie trailers. The Middle-East-and-Europe only Aston Martin Lagonda has never been to the US either, nor has the DBX electric crossover concept, and the utility vehicle got a coat of Mako Blue paint to make its introduction. The Vulcan racer got re-hued as well, in a coat of Saffron Orange. more...
